Since 2003, the Diocese of Columbus has required every parish to follow comprehensive Safe Environment policies to protect the young people entrusted to our care. These policies reflect the heart of our mission as Church: to safeguard the vulnerable and uphold the dignity of every person.
At Church of St. Edward the Confessor, we are focused on improving our practices and ensuring full compliance so that every young person in our care is protected. This renewed effort reflects our commitment to responsibility, vigilance, and caring for God’s children. We understand these expectations may feel new or may be different from past practice. Even so, our shared mission remains clear: to provide a safe, holy, and trustworthy environment for all ages, and to look out for one another as a parish family.
Because our parish provides many opportunities for youth to volunteer and participate, it is essential that every adult involved in these settings is in full Safe Environment compliance. -
What Are the Safe Environment requirements?
1. Register for Protecting God’s Children (PGC)
- Visit www.virtus.org
- Click “First-Time Registrant”
- Select Diocese of Columbus
- Choose session, complete registration, and attend training (you will receive automatic verification)
- Fee for Fastrax account is $25 and provides confidential quarterly updates provided to the Diocese
- Note: PGC training is good for the length of your volunteer service. It can be repeated if you would like.
2. Complete Background Check
- BCI required = you have lived in Ohio for 5+ consecutive years
- BCI + FBI required = you have lived outside Ohio in the past 5 years
- Any authorized WebCheck agency can complete fingerprinting; click "Fingerprinting Locations" below for a list of agencies
- Complete background check must be conducted every 5 years to remain compliant
