What is Confirmation? At Confirmation, we are called to be witnesses of our faith, and we receive special help through the Gifts of the Holy Spirit as the disciples did at Pentecost. Confirmation perfects the grace received at Baptism as we are sealed with the gifts of the Holy Spirit and strengthened to live out our baptismal promises. Similar to Baptism, Confirmation leaves an indelible mark on the soul and can never be repeated.
What Happens During Confirmation? Confirmation is celebrated during Mass with a bishop or his representative presiding. During the celebration, the bishop extends his hands over the Confirmandi and prays to God the Father, "Send your Holy Spirit upon them to be their Helper and Guide. Give them the spirit of wisdom and understanding, the spirit of right judgment and courage, the spirit of knowledge and reverence. Fill them with the spirit of wonder and awe in your presence." The bishop then makes the sign of the cross on their foreheads and anoints them, saying, "Be sealed with the Gift of the Holy Spirit." T
Scheduling Your Confirmation Teens are usually prepared to receive Confirmation when they are in eighth grade, about 14 years old. For further information, please contact our Parish School of Religion Office at 740-587-4160. There is also a program for high school students who have not yet been confirmed.
Adults who have not yet received the Sacrament of Confirmation may contact Dcn. John Barbour to learn about our OCIA (Order of Christian Initiation for Adults) process. Those interested in OCIA are encouraged to complete the OCIA Inquiry Form.
